Born March 19, 1830, at Winchester, Virginia. In 1844, he removed to Champaign County, Ohio and remained there for 11 years. He then removed to Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana where he was twice elected Assessor. Upon leaving Indiana he again journeyed westward and in 1864 he came to Henry County, Iowa, then in 1869 he located in Lee County, West Point, where he became Mayer of that city. His educational advantages were limited to those afforded by the common schools of the county. Mr. Lessenger married Miss Mary Driscoll in Muncie, Indiana in 1858. The confidence of his neighbors in him has been repeatedly manifested by calling on him to fill various responsible positions. He was one of the Board of Trustees of the Independent District of West Point, and President of the Lee County Stock Association. He was the originator of the District Fair, and Representative of Lee County in the Seventeenth General Assembly of Iowa, 1878.
