Born in Morgan, Indiana on September 10, 1837, to Preston Doty and Elizabeth Murphy. He passed away on 18 January 1899 in Macksburg, Iowa. James married Elizabeth Jane Marley on June 15, 1856, in Madison County, Iowa. They had ten children. He married his second wife Delila Downing on January 18, 1885, in Madison County, Iowa.
