Born in Tompkins county, New York, on June 14, 1824. He was raised a farmer, remaining at home to assist his father until 23 years of age. In 1847 he was married to Miss Caroline Cosgrove. For a period of six years after his marriage Mr. Terry remained in Tompkins county, then removed to California, where he for three years engaged in teaming and threshing. At the expiration of the three years he returned to New York, remained one year and then came to Iowa, locating in Wilton township, where he owned 400 acres of ground. During his residence in Wilton township he was honored with various offices and was twice sent to the Legislature to represent Muscatine county, which he did most acceptably. He was also President of the Muscatine County Agricultural Society. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
