John McCormick Whitaker
Van Buren County
Born February 11, 1801, in Clermont county, Ohio, when that great State was yet a territory. In 1827 he was a trader with the Indians in Michigan Territory. Seven years later he took his way westward to the wilderness which is now the State of Iowa. Mr. Whitaker was in the Territorial or State Legislature, or in the service of the State. For seven years he was the "locating agent" appointed by the Legislature to select and locate land donated to the State for the purposes of internal improvement, but devoted by the constitution to the support of the schools.
