Joseph Robertson was born in Virginia about 1807. He made his way west and located at New Boston, Mercer County, Illinois. He came to Iowa in 1836 and located at Rockingham. He was a good, sound, practical man in all things. A farmer and merchant, he was accommodating and possessed a benevolent heart, ever ready to do a kindly act; and for moral and Christian worth, he had no superior. His sterling integrity in all things, both private and public, ever drew around him a host of friends, and he was deservedly popular among his fellow citizens. He died in Iowa City while serving in the Eighth Legislative Assembly at 38 years old. According to the House Journal, James M. Morgan of Des Moines County announced Robertson’s death and said Robertson “was one of the oldest members of this House. He was, in every sense of the word, an honest man. He has left behind him a private character of unsuspected purity – and his public services stand approved in the repeated and uninterrupted evidences of confidence and honor bestowed upon him by his constituents.”
