Thomas Cox

Jackson County

Born in Kentucky in 1787. He was a member of Captain Samuel Judy’s Company of Mounted Spies in the War of 1812. During the Black Hawk War in 1832, Cox served in the Third Regiment of the Illinois Militia, and subsequently was promoted to colonel. Col. Cox’s legislative career began as a member of the first Illinois legislature in 1818. He was later appointed Deputy United States surveyor and surveyed Jackson and Jones Counties in Iowa. In Bellevue, Iowa, he participated in a frontier uprising known as the Bellevue War in 1840. Cox’s political career continued in Iowa and he was elected to the First, Second, Third, Fifth and Sixth Territorial Legislatures. He was chosen Speaker of the Third Territorial Legislature and in 1843-1844 he was President of the Territorial Council of the Legislature. Colonel Cox did not live to see Iowa become a state. He died of pneumonia on November 9, 1844.
