Hugh Denwiddie Downey
Johnson County
Born January 18, 1819, and lived in Johnson County, Iowa. He was a banker and lawyer within the area, and was eventually appointed by President Millard Filmore to run the U.S. Land Office in Iowa City. Mr. Downey married Jane Murray on October 8, 1845 in Iowa City. He served in the Territorial Legislature from 1845-1846. During his time, he was known as an efficient and cooperative member of the Legislature. Mr. Downey passed away at the age of 48 on September 26th, 1867.
