Ran on the Independent ticket and served in the 1st General Assembly. Mr. Holland married Sarah Cartwright on November 7, 1843, in Des Moines County, Iowa. She was born November 20, 1808, and died April 10, 1877. They lived in Des Moines County, Iowa, for several years after they were married. They had one child, Oscar J. Holland born about 1849 in Iowa. On March 31, 1849, Mr. Holland resigned his appointment at the Augusta Post Office in Des Moines County. In April, he left on a wagon train with about 75 others from the Burlington area for California gold. They arrived at their destination in late August. He died in California, October 8, 1849.
