Born in 1797, a native of Philadelphia. In June 1821, Mr. Snyder married Sarah Ann Flamand, a native of France. Shortly after their marriage, he and Sarah moved from their Philadelphia home to Laconia, Harrison County, Indiana, and were pioneers of that State. They had their first seven children, Louisa, Sarah, Mary, John, Joseph, Elizabeth and Catherine while living in Indiana. In the fall of 1839, the family moved to Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa. Their son, William, was born in 1843. Mr. Snyder having an honest and loyal reputation helped to establish Tipton, acquired the contract to finish erecting the local jail and also represented Cedar County in the last territorial legislature before Iowa became a state in 1846. In the spring of 1849, when his eldest son, John, had just turned 21 years old, they made a trip to California, starting with two wagons and being joined by others at the Missouri River. John remained in California finding success in mining and Mr. Snyder returned home to his family in Iowa. In the early 1850’s, he was appointed by the county commissioner to be the School Fund Commissioner responsible for selling appropriate lands and maintain the finances keeping the school fund solvent. In December, 1861, 6 months after the death of his wife, Mr. Snyder married 20 year old Amanda Roberts and had another 6 children (one of whom became mayor of Tipton in 1916), before his death in 1874.
