Educated in Bloomfield public schools, and attended Bloomfield Junior College. Married Frances Hartzler in 1948. Parents of four children, Stephen, Marcus, Heidi and William, all at home. Veteran of World War II. Served with navy in the South Pacific. Vocation is auctioneer and insurance agent. Former mayor of Bonaparte, Iowa. Active in many civic and fraternal organizations, including: deacon and Sunday School superintendent of Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge, Zerapath Consistory, Kaaba Shrine, IOOF, Izaak Walton League, BPOE, American Legion, Rotary, Farm Bureau, National and Iowa Associations of Auctioneers. Serving first term in senate.
