Attended Marshalltown public schools and the University of Chicago, Washington University and Iowa State University. Graduate of Drake University Law School in 1949 with degree of Juris Doctor. Married Carmel Bellini of San Francisco in 1945. Children: Sally, Jeffrey and Carol. Practicing attorney with the firm of Tye, Mills, Grimes and Peterson in Marshalltown. Served in World War II with the United States Marine Corps in eight Pacific campaigns. Received Purple Hearts, and was cited for valor as combat officer. Now holds rank of Major, U.S. Marine Corps Res. Past President of the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Adult Education Council. A member of the Episcopal Church and various civic, Masonic, Fraternal and patriotic bodies. Vice President of Tallyho Transport, Inc., and President of the Big Timber Cattle Co., breeders of purebred livestock and operator of over 1,000 acres of farm land in Central Iowa. Serving second session in the Senate.

Married Carmel Bellini of San Francisco, Calif., in 1945. Children: Sally, 17; Jeffrey, 13; Carol 10. Practicing attorney with the law firm of Mills and Grimes and former county attorney. Enlisted U. S. Marine Corps in February 1942 as a private, discharged January 1946 with a rank of major after having engaged as combat officer in eight Pacific campaigns. Awarded two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star. Past President of Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Adult Education Council. A member of the Episcopal Church and various civic, fraternal and patriotic bodies. Vice president of Tallyho Transport, Inc. and Mclntire Travel Agency. President of Big Timber Cattle Co., breeders of purebred Angus cattle and operators of over 1,000 acres of farm land. Serving first session in the senate.
