Born in Westmoreland County, England, September 24, 1851. He came to the United States in 1864 with his parents, John and Jane Dobson, and moved to Iowa in 1869. After six years of farming in Webster County, Mr. Dobson moved to Sac City where he was married October 28, 1876 to Sydnia A. Watt. Later he made his home in Iowa City, where he studied law and was graduated from the state university in 1878. He practiced in Newell for five years and served as mayor. He served on the school board and represented Buena Vista County in the state legislature in 1886, 1888 and 1890. Mr. Dobson served as secretary of state, and treasurer of Polk County. In 1905 he was appointed American consul to Hang Chow, China, but had to give up the position due to poor health. He was also vice president of the Des Moines Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
