Josiah McManaman was born in 1812 in Butler County, Ohio. By 1840, he had settled in Van Buren County, Iowa, where he appeared in the census as part of a five-person household. A farmer by occupation, Josiah married Mary Ann Newhall in Van Buren County in 1841. The 1850 census lists him as a farmer in the same county, living with Mary and their four children and three other relatives. In later years, the family moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where Josiah became the proprietor of the Clay Hotel on the Fairfield Square. He died on October 3, 1854.
