Born in Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, April 6, 1804, and was thirty-two years old when he came to Burlington, then in Wisconsin Territory. He is remembered as urbane and handsome, his manner and attire ever indicating his real nature as “a gentleman of the old school”. He married Sarah F. Deaton on October 27, 1825, in Madison County, Illinois. His occupation was a tailor. He served in the territorial legislature and became a state legislator, serving as Speaker of the House in the Third General Assembly, representing Des Moines County.
