Born in 1819 at Taylorstown, Pennsylvania. He was one of the first settlers in the Danville Township. He surveyed lots for the proprietors of Middletown, Iowa. He opened a sawmill in 1847. He was united in marriage to Catherine Ramsey April 27, 1844, in Middletown, Iowa. Mr. Sargent was elected to represent Des Moines County in the First, Second, and Fifth Iowa General Assemblies, 1846, 1848 and 1854.
