Royal Prentiss was born on January 12, 1824, in Athens County, Ohio, the son of Stanton and Susannah (Brookhart) Prentiss. During his boyhood, his family moved to Illinois, where he was raised on a farm. His education was limited to what he could gain in the local country schoolhouse, yet he rose to become both a farmer and a lawyer. In 1854, he married Mary Richardson in Louisa County, Iowa. His abilities and character earned him the confidence of his fellow citizens, and he was elected to serve as a legislator in the Seventh General Assembly of Iowa. Royal Prentiss died February 17, 1867.
