Born in Cumberland County, Ohio, April 15, 1827, and there began the study of medicine. At the conclusion of his studies at the Willoughby (Ohio) Medical School, in 1851, he came to Iowa, locating at Leon in 1853 and four years later moved to Decatur City. The same year he moved to Decatur City, he was elected to represent this county in the first legislature under the new constitution. On May 16, 1866, he was married to Miss Fanny Bruce, at Leon. It is almost two decades since Dr. Laney, with his family, came here from Decatur City and during all these years, he was ever the same--genial, charitable, a good friend, neighbor and citizen, as well as a physician who enjoyed the esteem of his fellow practitioners.
