Hugh Brady Lynch was born in 1827 in Ohio. He married Susan H. Akers in 1848 in Coshocton, Ohio, and in 1850 the family was still living in Coshocton where he was a farmer. By 1852 they had moved to Millersburg, Iowa, when he was appointed as the first postmaster in Iowa County. He was also the first doctor in Millersburg. During the Civil War he served in the 28th Regiment, Iowa infantry, as a major.
