Hercules Campbell was born April 19, 1828, in Franklin County, Ohio. He married Phoebe Carpenter in 1849. They moved to Iowa in 1856 and lived in Steady Run Township in Keokuk County with other family members in 1860. They had five children. He was a book peddler and hotel keeper. By 1866 the family had moved back to Franklin County, Ohio. Hercules died December 5, 1893.
