Born in Ohio about 1827. Mr. Barnes was the son of Wesley Barnes and Mary Smith Albert. Wesley Barnes was a farmer and one of the pioneers of Richland County, Ohio, settling there in 1816. He came to Iowa with his family in 1852. Thomas Barnes served as a representative from Mahaska county in the 8th (1860-1861) and 11th (1866-1867) General Assemblies. He became a 2nd Lieutenant July 21, 1961 with the 7th Iowa Infantry, Company F. He was promoted to First Lieutenant June 12, 1862 and resigned August 2, 1864. Lieut. T. N. Barnes was an aide-de-camp to General Lauman and four of his brothers served in the Civil War.
