Born in Scotland, December 26, 1829. When 3 years of age he came with his parents to Quebec, Canada, and there grew to manhood. It was there he formed an attachment for Miss Susan McEwen and was married to her at Montreal, Canada, March 19, 1853. Together they came west to Illinois in 1857, and the same year came on to Fort Dodge, Iowa. He farmed in the northeastern part of the county. Mr. Struthers was a man of sterling character, at all times holding the confidence of the people. He has repeatedly been called by them to hold office, in fact has almost continually been called to perform some public duty. He was elected to represent Pocahontas county in the Fourteenth General Assembly, 1872. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was high in the councils of this organization. He was also a Royal Arch Mason and an Odd Fellow.
