Born September 3, 1826, at Limerick, Me., son of Oliver and Rachael (Decker) Miles. He received his preparatory education at Limerick Academy and took the courses at the Medical School of Maine for the years 1852 and 1853. After graduation he settled in Washington County, Iowa, where he remained until the outbreak of the Rebellion, when he enlisted as first lieutenant, Co. F, Eleventh Iowa Infantry·. He was severely wounded at the battle of Shiloh in April, 1862, and resigned his commission the following October. His loyalty, however, would not suffer him to be idle while he could be of service to the cause, and in August, 1863, he was appointed assistant surgeon in the same regiment and served till the end of the war. After his return to civil life Dr. Miles resumed the practice of medicine in Iowa, but soon found his services were desired by his townsmen, not only in a professional way, but as their representative in the state legislature. He was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1868 and in 1870 was given a re-election. Two years later he was promoted to the higher branch of the legislature, and served as state senator for four years. In1883 he removed from Iowa to Schuyler, Nebraska, where he established a large practice and lived until his death. This took place 4 July, 1894. Dr. Miles was always considered a man of distinguished merit in all departments of life, and as a physician he was looked upon as a man of marked ability. He left behind him a memory that will always be revered by all who knew him.
