Born in Henry County, Indiana, March 26, 1840, where he resided till the breaking-out of the war, when he enlisted in the 19th Ind. Vol. Inf., Co. A, July 29, 1861. He was in the battles of Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness and many others. He was captured at the Wilderness, and remained a prisoner seven months, then honorably discharged from the service May 23, 1865. He then came to this county, his parents having moved here during his absence in the army. He has been a member of the County Board of Supervisors two terms, was School Director, and held the position continuously for twelve years. He was also a District Treasurer, nominated as a candidate for the Seventeenth General Assembly in a Convention held at Newton in the Fall of 1877, by the Republican party, and was elected by a flattering majority. He married Esther Macy April 12, 1866. He was a member of the Society of Friends.
