J. D. M. HAMILTON Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on July 1851. He was the son of the Hon. J. S. Hamilton and Sarah Miller Hamilton, His father was a prominent democrat in Pennsylvania. He came to Iowa in 1851, and settled In Fort Madison. He received his early education in the schools of Fort Madison, and took a literary course at Knox College at Galesburg. He afterward entered the law department of the Washington University of St. Louis, from which he graduated in 1875. Mr. Hamilton, following in the footsteps of his father, embraced democracy and became prominent in various campaigns as a speaker. He has served as city attorney for Fort Madison and was a member of the state legislature. He was presidential elector for the first district of Iowa. He was appointed by Governor Sherman as member of the commission to locate and build the southwestern hospital for the insane at Clarinda. In 1886, Mr. Hamilton was chairman of the committee on resolutions at the state democratic convention and was tended the nomination of state senator but refused the place. In March, 1887 he was elected mayor of Fort Madison. He was a Knight of Pythias having passed all chairs and in 1884 was grand chancellor of the state. He was also an Odd Fellow. He was a junior ember of the old firm of Valkenburg and Hamilton. He was married in 1878 to Miss Mary M. Rice of Keokuk.
