Born in West Virginia on February 11, 1832. It was this place that he spent his boyhood and received his education. On May 31, 1854, he was united in marriage to Miss Adeline Palmer at Wellsburg, W. Va. Shortly after, this marriage they moved to Graysville, Pa., where they resided until the latter part of December, 1863. In September, 1862, Mr. Gray enlisted as a second lieutenant of Company C of the 18th Pennsylvania cavalry. He served with the regiment until July of 1863, when he resigned and went home. The same year he came to Iowa and settled in Muscatine County. Being very prominent in the political affairs of his -township. Mr. Gray was one of the five men who voted the democratic ticket in 1864. He was a staunch democrat and served in the Iowa House of Representatives for two terms during the years 1877 and 1879. His record in both these sessions was very good. He was a man who was always trying to help the conditions of the people he met. He was trying to raise the standard of education and so make it easier for everyone.
