Born in Louisville, Kentucky, July 9, 1835. When he was twelve years old he attended an academy at Shelbyville, Kentucky. About this time the family moved to Eddyville, Iowa, where he remained on the farm until grown when he went to Ottumwa and studied law; and in 1857 he came to Albia and commenced the practice of his profession. On June 13, 1861, he enlisted in Company H. of the First Iowa Cavalry as a private and on August 20, 1862 was promoted to First Lieutenant. He served his state with honor and credit in both branches of the legislature, and also on the district bench. When not on the bench he practiced his profession at Albia until 1893, when he was compelled to lay aside active work on account of failing health. He was married at Albia, Iowa, in September 1860 to Martha J. Knight. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Albia.
