Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in January 2, 1846. He attended grammar and high school at Cleveland and after graduating from high school matriculated at Western Reserve College. Graduating from that institution he entered Harvard Law School in 1866. In 1869, he came to Sioux City, and engaged in the practice of law, which he continued until 1873, when he retired from the business. He was elected to the 17th General Assembly in 1878. In 1879 he declined to run for the legislature again and announced his candidacy for clerk of district court on the Republican ticket. He married Sarah Thornton in October 1870.
