Born in Dahl, near Hagen, Province of Westphalia, Germany, November 21, 1832, son of Christian and Marianna (Schmidt) Mueller, natives of Germany. He was educated in the common schools of his native place, and at 15 years of age was apprenticed to the carpenter's trade. In 1851 he emigrated alone to America, and stayed three months in Philadelphia, employed in a bakery, then returned to East New York, Long Island, and worked nine months at his trade. Then he went to Amanda, Fairfield Co., Ohio, and engaged in carpenter work two years. In the spring of 1854 he removed to Scott County, Ia., and worked at his trade until 1862. Then he purchased 160 acres of land in the southeast part of Butler Township, where he lived until 1872. He bought several tracts of land in the township, and owned 640 acres of good land, all improved. Mr. Mueller was married March 30, 1862, to Miss Christina Ketelsen. Our subject has been an active, representative man, having filled nearly every office of trust in the gift of the people of his township, and is at present a member of the State Legislature, which office he has filled with credit for the past 10 years. He is Republican in politics. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mueller are members of the German Lutheran Church.
