Born in Columbia County, New York, November 22, 1830. His parents, while he was quite young, removed to Jefferson County, Wisconsin. He obtained his college education in Carroll College and the State University of Wisconsin. During the war he joined Company E of the 12th Wisconsin Infantry, of which his father was Captain. He served two years and was discharged because of disability. He then entered the commissary department as a clerk, and served in that capacity until the end of the war. After his army life he settled in Mitchell County, Iowa. In 1883 he was elected representative in the 20th General Assembly.
