Born in Vermillion County, Indiana, June 1, 1850, and died in Seattle, Wash., January 30, 1928. He came to Iowa in 1870, settling in Hamburg the same year. He studied law in the office of V. A. Stow and in 1873 was admitted to the Iowa bar and entered the same office in which he had studied as a partner. Mr. Hammond was quite active in the early days of the county and of Hamburg and represented Fremont County several times in the state legislature. He was one of the Democratic leaders of this section of the state. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Red Oak, Iowa. He was united in marriage April 16, 1876 to Miss Florence Jones, of Hamburg.
