Born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on October 2, 1840, his parents being natives of Vermont. He was reared and educated at the place of his birth and was engaged in teaching school in the adjoining county when the war broke out. In April, 1861, he enlisted in Co. E., 3rd, Wis. Infantry Volunteers. He was discharged July 1st, 1864. Soon after, he re-enlisted in the 20th N. Y. Heavy Artillery said served to the end of the war. In August of the same year he came to Algona, being followed soon by his brother, Coleman, and together they established the home on the farm south of town which they occupied for 30 years. January 1st, 1869, he was united in marriage with Hattie M. Taylor. In 1872 he was elected County Supervisor and 1883 was chosen to represent this district in the upper the house of the Legislature. He was a member of the Grand Army, Army of the Republic and a Royal Arch Mason.
