Born in Scotland in October, 1843. His parents were Thomas Calvin and Elizabeth (Gibson) Risk of Wigtownshire, Scotland. The family immigrated to America in 1851, locating in Schenectady, New York, from which they removed to Buchanan County in 1855, taking up a farm in Newton Township. He married Elizabeth Brown in 1881. Hon. John Calvin served three terms in the Iowa state legislature - 16th, 17th, and 22nd General Assemblies. Mr. Calvin died in 1918 and is buried in Mt. Washington Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
