Born on November 27, 1850, in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. He died on March 22, 1937, at Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of eighty-six years. At an early age Mr. Springer came to Iowa City, Iowa, where he remained until his death. It was here that he established a reputation as a master printer. He made Iowa. newspaper history and the history of printing his hobby. He was co-owner of the Iowa State Press of Iowa City for twelve years. Later he was associated with the Economy Advertising Company. Mr. Springer assembled a large collection of volumes illustrative of fine printing and the history of printing. This collection he presented to the State University Library before his death. In 1891 Mr. Springer was elected State Representative and served as a member of the Twenty-fourth General Assembly. As a public servant, Mr. Springer was actuated only by a. sense of duty to the trust that was committed to him. He served his community and his state, and served them well.
