Born November 4, 1825, son of Elihu and Anna Wymer Jewell, in Knox county, Ohio, where his boyhood was spent alternately at the district school winters and on the farm summers He married Miss Emily Headington February 27, 1840, and the following spring moved to Wyandotte county where he engaged in farming until the spring of. 1850, when he sold out and started for the west, locating about two miles above where he resided. The land joins the corporation of West Decorah on the north. Mr. J. was one of the live, energetic and successful farmers of the county. He has served as a member of the board of supervisors of .Winneshiek county. Mr. Jewell's service on the Board of Supervisors covered several terms, and led him into more, than ordinary political activity. Always a staunch Democrat, in 1889 he was the nominee of his party for the office of state representative and was elected over Hon. Nels Lalson of Highland township who had served two terms in the office. He was re-elected in 1892.
