Born in 1863 in Allegheny City, Pa. His father, H. A. Coffin, who organized the Iowa Loan and Trust Company, came first to Des Moines in 1866 and located here permanently in 1878. Nathan Coffin was a graduate of Columbia University, Mo., Baptist college of Des Moines and of Harvard, class of 1885. In 1887 he was graduated from Harvard law school, and he was a teacher in Drake law school for many years. He was a member, successively, of the law firms of Mitchell, Dudley & Coffin, Dudley & Coffin, and Dudley, Coffin & Dowell. He was a member of the legislature in 1890. He was a member of the Central Church of Christ and the Drake board of trustees. He was married June 5, 1890, to Winniebel Ewing.
