The representative from the upper district of Lee county is the Hon. James B. Hazen, of West Point. He was born in Beaver county, Pa , May 25, 1827. There he resided and engaged in agricultural pursuits till 1866, when he came to Iowa, locating in Lee county, where he has always resided. The eighty acres of farm land which he then purchased formed the nucleus of his large farm. By thrift and industry Mr. Hazen has accumulated quite an extensive property, and is considered one of the most influential farmers of his county. He is a self made man as well, having received the most of his education from experience and observation. He has always affiliated with the democratic party, casting his first vote in 1848, and has never missed a vote since. He has always taken a lively interest in politics, and while not an Orator in legislative work, he is a most capable legislator. He has filled several of his township offices, but never asked for greater till two years ago, when he asked for and received the election for representative from Lee county. He was re-elected last fall, by acclamation, showing that his splendid services were appreciated. Mr. Hazen was married to Miss Emily Severns, October 19, 1848. To them have been born five children, of which the eldest son is deceased. He is a member of the Baptist church. Last session he served on the committees on domestic manufactures, compensation of public officers, Agricultural college, horticulture, board of public charities, Institution for the Feeble-Minded, and enrolled bills.

The elder of Lee county's Democratic members of the House is the Hon. James B. Hazen, of West Point. He was born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, May 25, 1827. As a boy he attended the schools of his native state, then pursued the occupation of farming. In 1866 he came to Lee county, Iowa, located on a farm, and has remained there ever since. He was married as a young man to Miss Emily Severns. Their life has been long, happy and prosperous. Five children have been born to them, of whom four are living. They are: Susannah, Eliza, Samuel and Hervey Hazen. Mr. Hazen has always been a Democrat. He has held a number of township offices, but has not mixed in politics to any great extent. He would like to see a judicious license law enacted by the Legislature this winter. He is a member of the Baptist church. Mr. Hazen possesses the valuable quality of being-able to keep his eyes open and mouth shut, taking advantage of what he observes going on around him. By careful management and industry he has saved enough to fit up a model farm and home, and has enough besides to keep him in comfort. Such men of ripe experience and judgment are valuable in the Legislative halls of the state.
