Madison county has had the good fortune to send experienced men to the house to represent its interests in the past years, and the selection of a new representative this winter was a wise one. The county is a republican stronghold in the state, and the Hon. John Shambaugh has been a life-long worker in that party. He is a native of Ohio, born in New Rumsey, October 13, 1848. His wife was Miss Elizabeth Sutshell. They have one son, 15 years old. Mr. Shambaugh came to Iowa in 1873, and located in Madison county, and immediately established himself with the farming interests of that locality. He owns and lives on one of the finest farms in Iowa, with one of the most hospitable homes in the county. He has always been a farmer and stock feeder. He is one of the heaviest cattle feeders in Madison county, feeding for shipment about 200 head each winter. That he is a success in this business is evidenced by the fact that his stock commands the highest market prices of any resident in his district. He has lived on and owned the same quarter section since his removal to the state. Mr. Shambaugh is a member of the United Brethren church. He comes to the house well informed on legislation pertaining to the interests of the farmer, and especially interested in all such matters. He has never been an aspirant for public office, even the local ones which his friends would have been glad to honor him with. He is one of the wide-awake farmers, a citizen of integrity, a man who reads, and profits by his readings of the current events. By reason of this he will be of much service to his constituents. Personally, Mr. Shambaugh will win friends among his colleagues by his genial bearing and individuality.
