Born in Baden, Germany, June 9, 1837. He emigrated to America in 1855, coming first to Cincinnati, Ohio, the next year to Illinois and in 1859 to Clinton county, Iowa, where he maintained his residence until his death. He was a director of the De Witt Savings Bank, and Representative from Clinton County in the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth General Assemblies.
