The county that gives to the state a republican governor for the next two years contributes a democratic representative to the house for this session. The county is Crawford, and the Hon. Theodore Blume is the man. He was elected after one of the closest and hardest fought county political battles of last fall's campaign, such a contest that is always a compliment to the victor. Mr. Blume was born in Marshall county, Ill., December 10,1861, on a farm. He was raised on the farm, his earlier education received in the common schools. At the age of 23 he entered college to fit himself thoroughly for the profession of teacher, which profession he followed till the spring of 1895. He began teaching in country schools, after which he was one year instructor and two years principal of the normal department of Greer college, Hoopeston, Ill. He resigned that position to accept the principalship of the schools at Dyersville, Iowa, the autumn of 1894. Having purchased the old homestead, ''Orchard Grove,'' in the spring he resigned that position to take up farming life. Mr. Blume has not, as yet, accumulated much of worldly goods, so works his farm by his own labor. He is of German parentage. He was married August 1, 1894, to Miss Olive Amalie Girard, and two little girls brighten their home. He is a member of no church, but is of the Universalist faith and teachings. He has been a resident of this state since March, 1880. Mr. Blume is especially interested in legislation pertaining to more equitable laws controlling public carriers, and also to the betterment of our school laws.
