Born in Adams County, Ohio, on June 13, 1846, and was but six years of age when his mother removed to Iowa. When eighteen years old he went to Keokuk, and during the years 1864 and 1865 was employed as clerk in a mercantile house. He then went to Corydon, where he served as deputy auditor several years and in June, 1869, en gaged in the lumber business with his brother Allen. In 1874 he organized and became cashier of the first bank ever established in Allerton. He was elected a member of the 29th general assembly, and was recognized as a useful member of that body.
