From Buchanan county comes the Hon. H. J. Griswold as the member of the House. He is a native of Wisconsin, having been born at Janesville, November 13, 1858. His parents brought him to Iowa at an early age, and the greater part of his life was spent on the farm near Winthrop. He attended the schools there and gained a good education. For twenty-five years he attended to the duties on the farm and then as a longing for the town took possession of him he moved to Winthrop and opened a store. In this business he has been engaged with success up to the present time. He has at various times held township offices, but his first venture into a broader field of public action was his election to the House two years ago. He served his constituents faithfully and was sent to Des Moines again this winter. His work two years ago was done in the following committees: Medicine and surgery, hospitals for the insane, compensation of public officers, state university, woman suffrage, police regulations, military, public library.
