Born December 5, 1864, at Wilton Junction, IA. He married Miss Fannie Morrison there in 1891 and they moved immediately to Primghar, where he was engaged in the banking business. While there he served as a democratic state representative from O'Brien County in the Thirtieth General Assembly, 1904. Mr. Whitmer was selected to fill a vacancy in the Thirty-first General Assembly, in 1905. The Whitmers moved to Sioux City in 1904, and he joined William Gordon in the real estate, loan and insurance business with offices in the old Iowa building. Mr. Whitmer became secretary and treasurer of the Pelletier Company in 1906, a post he held until 1912. He then was attracted to the banking business as president of the Farmers Trust and Savings bank, which had been established in 1909. After holding the office about a year, Mr. Whitmer joined the National Bank of Commerce in 1913, only to return to the loan business in 1914 with an office in the Iowa building. Two years later he became president of the Bankers Loan and, Trust company which had been organized in September, 1915. The well-known financier was a member of Abu Bekr Shrine, Knights Templar and First Congregational Church.
