Born December 4, 1850 in Ericksberg, Sweden. He came to this country landing at New York April 17, 1868 and was in Princeton, Illinois by April 24, 1868. He moved to Burlington, Iowa, in 1869. He was a bridge carpenter for CG&O Railroad. When his parent came to this country in 1872, he helped on their farm in Lucas County. He became a clerk for a merchant in Chariton. He then operated his own mercantile store in Russell, Iowa for 16 years. In 1897 he opened the business of R.A. Hasselquist and Sons in Chariton. He sold out his share in 1903 when he was elected to the Iowa Legislature. He served in the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth and Thirty-first Iowa General Assemblies, 1900-1906. In 1906 he resigned from the Senate to become postmaster and served until 1915. For a short time in 1905 he was an agent for Tone Brothers for southern Iowa and northern Missouri. He served as secretary of Chariton Commercial Club. He was raised Lutheran. He married Laura Davis in August 1852. After marriage he and his wife joined the Presbyterian Church in Russell and later in Chariton. He was an elder from 1902-1932.
