Representative from Guthrie county. Born near Painesville, Lake county, Ohio. His father was born on Long Island, New York. His mother was born in Canada. Both came to the "Western Reserve" during their early lives. In 1855, the family came to Iowa and settled on land purchased from the government in Green township, in Iowa county. He worked on the farm, attended district school, winters, and in 1870 and 1871 attended a few terms at McClain's Academy, at Iowa City. In September, 1872, he entered the law department of the University, and graduated the following June. The winter of 1873 and 1874 he spent in the law office of Yocum, Anderson & Robb in Albia, Iowa. In September of 1874 he was in David City, Nebraska. In May following, returned to Iowa, taught school in winter of 1875 and 1876, and in May, 1876, came to Guthrie Center and began the practice of law, and has been actively engaged therein ever since. Was a delegate from Seventh district to National convention that nominated Hon. James G. Blaine, in 1884. Four years later was an alternate to the National convention that nominated Hon. Benjamin Harrison. Was secretary of National Republican League from 1902 to 1906. Elected Representative in 1903 and re-elected in 1906. Served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. A Republican in politics.
