Representative from Linn county. Born in Armagh county, Ireland, and came with his parents to the United States in 1852. He received his education in the rural schools. He worked on the farm till the winter of 1861-1862, when he taught school, but before the term expired he enlisted in Company I, Sixty-ninth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded at the battle of Stone River and was taken prisoner on the thirty-first day of December, 1862. Was sent to Libby prison at Richmond, Virginia, but was soon exchanged and rejoined his regiment before it started on the campaign to Chattanooga. He participated in the battles of Tullahoma, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. In the early spring of 1864 he re-enlisted as a veteran and shortly after was severely wounded, being shot through the neck at the battle of Resaca, Georgia, May 14, 1864. The wound in the neck injured his voice so that it has been difficult for him to speak ever since. After recovering from his wound he rejoined his regiment and was on the March to the Sea and through the Carolinas and on to Washington. Was on the grand review at Washington May 23, 1865, and was mustered out with his regiment at Louisville, Kentucky, July 17, 1865. Attained the rank of sergeant in the army. Came to Iowa in 1866 and has devoted most of his time to farming and raising stock. Was married in 1871 and has eight children. He has held all the various township offices and was elected Representative from Linn county in 1903 and re-elected in 1906, and has served in the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. He has retired from active farm life and now lives in the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A Republican in politics.
