Representative from Calhoun county. Born at Lacon, Marshall county, Illinois. He is of Scotch-Irish descent on his father's side and German on his mother's side. Attended the common schools of Illinois until 1868, the time of the removal of his parents from Illinois to Iowa, after which he attended the high school at Fort Dodge, Iowa. For a few years thereafter he assisted in farming in the summer season and taught school in the winter season. Appointed postmaster at Pomeroy, Iowa, and served in that capacity for five years. Also served as mayor of this town for five years. Engaged in the banking and real estate business in Pomeroy in the year 1886 and has followed this business continuously since. He became president of the Pomeroy State Bank, which position he now holds. He has for many years been identified with the agricultural interests of his portion of the State. Elected Representative in 1903 and re-elected in 1906, and served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. He took an active part in securing the passage of the present drainage laws of the State. A Republican in politics.
