Representative from Grundy county. Born at Hanover, Ill., of Scotch-Irish parentage. He attended the public school in the village of Hanover, assisting his father in the summer time with the farm work as he grew older, and attending school in the winter months. In 1870 he came with his parents to Grundy county, Iowa, where he continued to work on the farm in summer and attended the district school in the winter. In the winter of 1873-1874 he became a student of the German-English Normal College at Galena, Illinois, attending that institution for four winters, continuing his active duties on the farm during the summer. While pursuing his college studies it was his intention to fit himself for and to enter the teaching profession, but after one winter spent at this work he decided definitely to continue his work on the farm. In 1879 he married Clara S. Edgerton; has two daughters and three sons. Has devoted all his energies to the management of his farm and for over twenty years has been largely interested in the breeding of Shorthorn cattle. Has served as trustee, township clerk and as county supervisor, serving also as township school treasurer for a number of years. Elected Representative in 1903 and re-elected without opposition in 1906, serving during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. A Republican in politics.
