His parents were American-born. He acquired his education in the common schools and at the high school in the village of Fennimore. In 1881 he moved with his parents to Palo Alto county, Iowa, where he has since resided. He began life as a country school-teacher. In 1884 he was married to Miss Gertrude Franklin. After his marriage he settled on a farm in Rush Lake township, where he resides at this time. In 1897 he was elected Recorder of Palo Alto county, and held the position for four years. In 1903 he was elected to the State Senate and served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. A Republican in politics.
