Representative from Franklin county. Born in Washtenaw county, Michigan. His father and mother were both born in Vermont. He was the fourth child in a family of ten children, consisting of seven boys and three girls. He was one of the five sons who served in the army in the War of the Rebellion. When a child his parents moved to Wisconsin, where they lived near Waukesha until 1843, when they moved to Whiteside county, Illinois. They resided here until 1859, when they came to Iowa. He was educated in the common schools until he was sixteen years of age, when he was "given his time." For a short time he worked at the carpenter trade. Attended the Lee Center school in Lee county, Illinois, teaching winters and attending the academy in spring and fall terms. Taught school nine terms and read law under Joseph Knox of Rock Island and C. J. Johnson of Morrison. Was admitted to the bar in Clinton county, Iowa. Afterwards moved to Franklin county, Iowa, where he has practiced his profession ever since, except six years when he was Clerk of the District Court of Franklin county. Was County Attorney under the old law and under the new law was County Attorney for four years. Was mayor of the city of Hampton for one term. He cast his first vote for John C. Fremont. Elected Representative in 1903 and re-elected in 1906. Served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. A Republican in politics.
