Representative from Delaware county, was born March 29, 1854, on a farm in Clayton county, three miles from the present town of Edgewood, Iowa. His parents were Rev. N. W. and Ruby (Knapp) Bixby, natives of Vermont, early pioneers of Iowa, coming to this State in 1847. The early years of his life were spent on the farm and in attending district school. He commenced teaching early in life, closing a winter term of school before he was seventeen years of age. He then entered Wilton College. After leaving college he took up teaching as a profession and achieved success as a teacher in the common schools and later as principal of graded schools. On May 22, 1879, he was married to Flora R. Blanchard, a daughter of Dr. L. Blanchard, a native of New York. They have a family of four children. Soon after his marriage he engaged in mercantile business in Edgewood, conducting the same for nineteen years. He acquired considerable landed interests, among which is the old homestead his father entered from the government. At present he is engaged in superintending farming operations and in the breeding of registered cattle and sheep. He was a member of the school board for many years and also held office of township clerk for several years. Elected Representative in 1903 and re-elected in 1906. Served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second General Assemblies. A Republican in politics.

Born March 29, 1854, on the old Bixby homestead three miles northwest of Edgewood. His parents were the Rev. Newell W. Bixby and Ruby Knapp-Bixby, who were pioneer Baptist ministers in this section. At the completion of his local schooling Mr. Bixby taught school to earn a higher education, which he received at the Wilton College, Wilton, Iowa. He then taught in Delaware, Clayton and Cedar counties and was principal of the Edgewood school when he was married to Miss Flora Blanchard May 22, 1879. That year he entered into partnership with his father-in-law. Dr. Lewis Blanchard, in the mercantile business in Edgewood. This partnership continued for five years and then Mr. Bixby purchased the village drug store and continued to operate this until 1898 when he retired from commercial life to concentrate on his farming interests. In 1909 he opened an insurance and real estate office. He was still an acting notary public and Justice of the peace, having been reelected to the latter office on Nov. 5th. Mr. Bixby served through three sessions of the legislature, the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second general assemblies as a republican representative from Delaware County. He introduced the Bixby bill on the preservation of forests and it is still one of the laws of the state. He also introduced bills for the advancement of agricultural interests. He was one of the oldest members of the Pioneer Lawmakers association and had attended most of its meetings in Des Moines. Mr. Bixby had served the Delaware County Republican organization as chairman at various times for many years.
